April 9

Today's Reading

Deuteronomy: Moses, at the end of his life, shares his words of blessing to each of Israel's tribes.

Luke: do you remember when Jesus cursed the fig tree during Holy Week? It withered and died. The fig tree was symbolic of the nation of Israel, even back in the Old Testament.

Psalms: whatever the reasons, God chose Judah as the tribal family through whom the Messiah would be born.

Proverbs: I pray that you and I can help people by encouraging them as they face life's trials. I know I need it!

What are your thoughts today?

  1. This passage of Luke is some of the most powerful of Jesus' words for me. How often do we in the Church judge ourselves better than others because something bad happened to them and not to us? How often do we, like the synagogue leader, get upset because someone else broke 'the rules' even though we bend them all the time. Luke's story of the fig tree is much more personal also. How many of us have been saved from being 'cut down' because Jesus turned to the father and said, ‘Sir, give (him/her) one more chance. Leave it another year, and I’ll give it special attention and plenty of fertilizer. 9 If we get figs next year, fine. If not, then you can cut it down.?”
