Today's Reading

Genesis. I always read today's passage with tears. The story of reconciliation is, I believe, the most powerful story of all. God sent His Son Jesus to reconcile us to Himself. Jesus' ancestor Judah took the front position so that Joseph could be reconciled to his family. I deeply hope to hear many of your responses to this today!

Matthew includes two familiar accounts today. What insights do you have as you read them?

Psalms today is the rousing crescendo at the end of David's prayer. Notice how he has moved from acknowledgment of God's strength to a commitment to destroy his (David's) enemies. In the New Testament (Ephesians), we are told that our enemies are not flesh and blood, but from hell itself.

Proverbs again reminds us to walk in wisdom. We are near the end of these foundation preparations and will see them built upon with the formidable material of wise principles.

If you find your initial enthusiasm for this task waning, you are normal. I encourage you to move through this stage. Someone explained it to me long ago that we move from Desire to Discipline to Delight. It will take another week or two for the daily discipline to be cemented in your life. Hang in there! You will have days of great inspiration and other days when you aren't sure exactly what you are reading. That's normal!

Feedback time!

  1. I also am always terribly moved by today's Genesis passage on reconciliation of Joseph to his brothers - and soon - to his father Jacob.

Matthew: The story of the fishes and loaves always reminds me of God's great power and glory. There are days I need this message even more than others. I wonder that if my faith should be tested in such a manner as Peter's, if I also would be found wanting.

I have to admit that as I have delved daily into this year's reading through the bible, I have as yet to feel it a chore. Rather, I marvel at how new and exciting some of these familiar passages are to me. I am sure the dry spell(s) will come - but not yet. I think reading your insights and the comments from and to fellow Climbing Companions is something I truly look forward to each morning also. Again, thank you Sam.

  2. Hi Sam-Just wanted to let you know I am still with you. I am enjoying reading the Bible this way. Also everyone's comment and your observations. I am still having difficulty concentrating and retaining, but am determined i will complete this. You may not hear from me much, but I am still following along.

  3. Linda and Roberta, I couldn't help but notice the contrast between your two comments. Praise God for the times when the Scripture just speaks to us. Praise Him for the persistence to stay with it when it is hard. May God bless each of you as you faithfully read. May He speak to your hearts and meet your deepest needs.
