Today's Reading

Genesis. Our today includes a long list of people. Do you see any you recognize? C.S. Lewis had an interesting opinion on why the lifespan of people was so long back then. He said that it may have been because they lived such a relatively short time after our first parents ate from the Tree of Life. His idea was that the fruit of that tree made it difficult for people to die and that "problem" was passed down from generation to generation.

Any comments or questions about Noah and the ark?

Matthew. What do you notice about Jesus' encounter with the devil in the wilderness?

Psalms. How much do you struggle with fear? Today's Psalm reveals an area in which I need to grow. The picture of security in God's love is powerful and, truthfully, not always my experience.

Proverbs. I find it very tempting to think that life consists in my possessions. I know it's not true, but the temptation is real.

Every question is a good one. Every comment will be respected. I encourage you to jump in.

  1. In Genesis 6 it talks about the sons of God taking human women and having children with them. Mabye I asked this before, but why?? I wonder if God decided to send these angel-like creatures to the earth to help the procreation of the world along? Is there any history recorded or drawings to show what the Nephilites actually looked like? Very, very interesting!

  2. While reading the account of Noah's ark, it struck me how terrifying and violent the flood was. Which begs the question, why do we decorate our children's nurseries in Noah's ark themed baby gear and tell the story to kids in Sunday School? Clearly it is a story of God's faithfulness and promise, but also of God's wrath. Just a thought.

  3. Ranelle, your question leads to answers that are partly based on Scripture and partly speculation. "Sons of God" may refer to FALLEN angels. Why call them "Sons of God" then? Simply because they were directly created by Him before they fell. If they are indeed demons (as I suspect), they became involved with human women to further corrupt Man. Scripturally, there was a correlation between the Nephilim and, later, the Anakim. Goliath was of their descendants and several of them are described in the writings from about the time of David.

Lara, you hit that nail on the head! Still, though, the story of the ark and the animals and the ark and the rainbow is one of the easiest for a small child to connect to.
