Today's Reading
1 Kings. My wife reminded me that, while some of Judah's kings were good and others were evil, all of Israel's kings were evil (after the nation divided). Ahab was near the top of the heap of bad rulers. His wife Jezebel was worse than him. About 50 years ago, a pastor named R.G. Lee had a very famous sermon about them, called "Payday Someday." If you can afford the hour, here it is on youtube. Before this account is finished, we will see the judgment of God against their wickedness.
Acts. This vivid depiction of the beginning of Paul's missionary journeys keeps mentioning John Mark. Remember that, because he will be the source of some controversy later in the story. He was already mentioned the night Peter was miraculously released from prison by an angel. That night he found the disciples praying for him at the home of John Mark's mother. John Mark would write his Gospel (Mark) shortly after this, using the descriptions he heard from Peter.
Psalms. One can only imagine the torment of soul they were going through to write such a scathing curse toward their enemies.
Proverbs. Many foolish, young people go on to receive some type of education after they grow up a bit.

1 Kings was challenging today! I had a hard time keeping the story straight, but toward the end things became a little more straight forward.
ReplyDeleteI am reading and will reply later this evening. Thanks for the blog. Reading together is always more enlightening and it is encouraging to have someone provide feedback.
ReplyDeleteI Kings – (1) I often wonder if God will punish the United States for living her own way instead of following God, furthermore, if God will allow other nations to gain strength and become our enemies as He did with Judah and Israel. (2) Elijah was committed to the one true God. How would God evaluate my commitment?
ReplyDeleteActs – I didn’t know that Barnabas meant “Son of Encouragement”. In fact, his real name was Joseph. Regardless, he went to bat for Paul when no one else would. He also encouraged Mark into an effective ministry. I pray that the Holy Spirit will help me see those who need encouragement and give me the words to encourage.
Psalm 137 – I would like to know more about Babylon and the assault against God and His Kingdom.
Luke, the Bible is full of information about Babylon (modern-day Iraq) and Assyria (modern-day Iran). Many of the prophets of the Old Testament include some of Israel's history with these nations. Author Joel Rosenberg has written some very good books, both fiction and non-fiction that can help understand the Scriptures about those nations.
ReplyDeleteThank you. I will look at those sources.
